Choosing the Right Size for Your Children's Book
The size of a children’s book often depends on its intended audience and how they will interact with it. Here’s a quick guide to common children’s book sizes:
Board Books (Ages 0-4): These sturdy books are designed for little hands. Smaller sizes, like 6″ x 6″, are perfect for toddlers to hold and explore.
Picture Books (Ages 4-8): Picture books often feature large, colorful illustrations. Landscape formats, up to 12″ x 9″, provide ample space for artwork and text.
Early Readers (Ages 4-8): As children begin to read independently, portrait formats become more common. Sizes range from 5.5″ x 8.5″ to 9″ x 12″, striking a balance between illustrations and text.
Chapter Books & Middle Grade (Ages 6-12): These books typically follow standard paperback sizes, such as 5.5″ x 8.5″ or 8″ x 10″, making them familiar and comfortable for young readers.
Ultimately, the best size for your children’s book depends on your specific needs and creative vision. Consider the age of your target audience, the amount of text and illustrations, and the overall design aesthetic when making your decision.

Paper Options for Your Children's Book
The paper you choose for your children’s book plays a big role in its visual appeal and how young readers interact with it. Here’s a breakdown of our most popular options:
Gloss Art Paper: This paper gives your illustrations a vibrant, eye-catching finish. Colors appear richer and more saturated, making images “pop” off the page. It’s a great choice for picture books with lots of colorful artwork.
Matte Art Paper: Matte paper offers a softer, more subtle look. It reduces glare, making text easier to read, which is ideal for books with a higher word count. While colors may appear less intense than on gloss paper, they still reproduce beautifully.
Uncoated Paper: This paper is perfect for interactive books that encourage drawing, coloring, or writing activities. Its absorbent surface works well with pencils, crayons, and markers, allowing children to engage directly with the book.
We’ll be happy to help you select the best paper type for your children’s book based on your illustrations, design, and target age group.

Choosing the Right Paper for Your Children's Paperback
When it comes to children’s paperbacks, durability is key. These books need to withstand lots of eager page-turning and the occasional accidental drop. That’s why we recommend using a thicker, more robust paper stock for the interior pages:
For shorter books (32 pages or less): We suggest using 200 gsm / 135 lb coated paper to ensure a sturdy spine and overall durability.
For longer books: 128 gsm / 86 lb, 157 gsm / 106 lb, or 200 gsm / 135 lb coated paper are all excellent choices for children’s paperbacks. These papers provide a good balance of strength and print quality.
Keep in mind that thicker paper will make your book more resistant to wear and tear, ensuring it can be enjoyed for years to come. We’re happy to discuss your specific needs and recommend the best paper option for your children’s paperback.

Choosing the Best Binding for Your Children's Book
The way your children’s book is bound affects its durability, how it opens, and its overall look and feel. There are several excellent binding options to consider:
Hardcover Binding
This classic method involves grouping pages into sections called "signatures," which are sewn together for durability. The pages are then attached to sturdy cover boards that are wrapped in a printed cover. Hardcover books have a premium look and feel, offering excellent protection for the pages.
Perfect Binding
Also known as "sewn and perfect binding," this method is often used for paperbacks. Pages are gathered into signatures, sewn, and then glued to a flexible cover. The spine is then trimmed to create a smooth, clean edge. Perfect binding is a cost-effective and durable option for children's books.
Board Book Binding
Ideal for books designed for toddlers and young children, board book binding uses thick, sturdy pages that are glued together for extra durability. The cover can be created in two ways: self-covered (where a printed sheet wraps around the cover boards) or hardcover (where a separate hardcover is added).
Saddle Stitch Binding
This simple and economical binding method is best for books with a low page count. Pages are folded in half and stapled along the spine. It's a common choice for booklets and magazines.
Spiral Binding
Spiral binding (also known as coil binding) offers flexibility and allows pages to lay flat. This makes it a good option for activity books or books with interactive elements that require children to write or draw on the pages.
Matching Binding Styles to Children's Book Types
Different types of children’s books often call for different binding styles. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best fit:
Board Books
These sturdy books for toddlers and preschoolers are typically not bound in the traditional sense. Instead, thick pages are glued together and covered with a printed wrap. Hardcover board books are also an option for a more premium feel.
Picture Books
Picture books often use saddle stitch binding with sewn (rather than stapled) pages for added safety and durability. Hardcover binding is also a popular choice for high-quality picture books.
Early Readers
Similar to picture books, early readers can use saddle stitch or perfect binding. Perfect binding is a good option for longer early readers with more text.
Chapter Books
Due to their length, chapter books are almost always perfect bound as paperbacks. Hardcover binding is sometimes used for special editions or collections.
Middle Grade
These books are typically perfect bound as paperbacks, similar to adult fiction. Hardcover binding is also suitable.
While other binding styles are available, these are the most common and practical choices for different types of children’s books. We’ll be happy to discuss your specific project and recommend the best binding for your needs.
Design and Layout Tips for Your Printed Project
High-quality printing requires careful preparation of your digital files, regardless of the specific product. Whether you’re creating a book, brochure, poster, or any other printed piece, understanding key design principles is essential.
Here are some tips to ensure your files are print-ready:
File Formats
For the best printing results, save your artwork as a vector-based PDF. We recommend using Adobe InDesign or Illustrator for your children's book design. These programs make it easy to convert your color space from RGB to CMYK, which is essential for offset printing.
Image Resolution
If you're working with bitmap images (like those from Photoshop), make sure they have a resolution of 300 DPI. Vector graphics don't require you to worry about resolution, but all other image types need to be high-resolution to avoid looking blurry or pixelated when printed.
Bleed Zones
Add a 3mm bleed zone around every page of your artwork. This extends the image beyond where the page will be trimmed, ensuring that no white edges show after cutting. Mark your bleed zones with red lines in your design file.
Trim Lines
Indicate the trim lines within the bleed zone. These lines show where the pages will be cut to their final size. To avoid important parts of your design getting cut off, make sure all key elements are at least 10mm away from the trim lines.
We understand that preparing files for printing can be technical. While we prefer to receive print-ready files, our team is happy to assist you every step of the way. We can answer your questions, explain the process, and even work with your designer to ensure your files are perfect for printing.
